In Shared Lives an adult who has care or support needs is matched with a compatible carers.
Carers share their home, family and community life with the person, helping to develop and maintain independent living skills, friendships and connections in their local area.
People who use Shared Lives are able to access:
- Somewhere to live long term
- Somewhere to stay for a short break or respite
- Somewhere to go for day time support
- Support to help prevent hospital admission
- Short term support following hospital discharge
What does the Shared Lives scheme do?
As a scheme we find people who want to be shared lives carers and always ensure that:
- We complete lots of checks (including checks with the police) to make sure they are safe
- We make sure they are the right kind of people to be Shared Lives carers
- We give them training to develop their skills and knowledge
We make sure people are matched with carers that are right for them by:
- Visiting people at home to discuss Shared Lives and get to know them
- Arranging trial visits for people to meet Shared Lives carers and see if they get on
- Making sure that Shared Lives carers have the right skills to support each person
- Regularly visiting the Shared Lives carers and the people matched with them and we can be contacted at any time for support and advice
- We review all of our placements to make sure things are going well
What types of support do our carers offer?
Our carers are very committed and flexible in the support they offer, which can include:
- Support to develop and maintain skills such as preparing food, shopping and budgeting
- Support to develop and maintain skills for household tasks
- Help to expand social circles and community links
- Support to build confidence and increase independence
- Help to access work or education
- Support with personal care
- Help to get involved with social and community activities
