Manchester
Following the events in Manchester, we ask for all communities to offer support and guidance to each other. The AƬ Secretary, Amber Rudd noted that
“The public should remain alert but not alarmed. If they have anything to report, they should approach the police. But I have two further things to add. The great city of Manchester has been affected by terrorism before. Its spirit was not bowed; its community continued. This time it has been a particular attack on the most vulnerable in our society – its intention was to sow fear – its intention is to divide. But it will not succeed.”
#WeStandTogether is a National community led initiative to celebrate our difference: promote respect & tolerance; building a safer, stronger United Kingdom. In Gwent we are very fortunate to have a safe, tolerant and diverse County, but we want you to join the movement to celebrate our diversity and differences and encourage a sense of unity.
The Prevent strategy is part of the UK Counter-Terrorism Strategy known as CONTEST. The Council works in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations through the Gwent CONTEST Board. The board oversees the local implementation of CONTEST.
The CONTEST strategy has four key elements:
- Pursue – to stop terrorist attacks
- Prevent – to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting violent extremism
- Protect – to strengthen our protection against terrorist attack
- Prepare – where an attack cannot be stopped, to mitigate its impact
As the UK faces a continuing threat from both international terrorism and domestic extremism, no one is better placed than members of the public to notice concerning activity and behaviours within their own community.
It may be nothing, but if you see it or suspect it - report it by phoning Gwent Police on 101 or 01633 838111 or in the case of emergency by dialling 999. Alternatively you can call the Anti-Terrorism hotline 0800 789321.
